Whilst researching "The Cricket Grounds of Durham" for the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians" I came across this photograph in "Heavisides"s Almanack for 1911" The author, Michael Heavisides, describes it as "A Stockton Eleven and supporters fifty years ago" - that is to say c1861 - He also includes the following caption; "Read from left to right- Percy Dyke, T.Crosby, J.Ayre,T.Dyke,Jos.Dodds,T.Darnton, Jon. Joy, T.Garbutt, Prince Stockdale, Dr.Richardson, - Beaver, T.W.Hornby, T.Robinson, W.Halton, Tommy Marshall, N.Darnton, O.Hind. I believe the photo was taken at Stockton C.C."s ground at Portrack Lane, their home ground from c1849 - c 1870.

J. Ayre and O. Hind are on my family tree and it is very possible these are they!

Very exciting and should be included in my Smith Street website history pages for today's descendants to see. =D

My comment on the wonderful http://www.picturestockton.co.uk site:

Old Mr. Thompson taught myself (born 1960) and my aunt Ann Sheraton (born 1944). I assume my uncle John Sheraton (born 1947) also attended the school - they lived in Norton, Cottersloe Road - but I do know that my uncle spent quite a lot of time away from school due to Polio. Can anyone tell me if my aunt or uncle appear on this photo? It"s difficult to know for sure.
